MJC FILM SERIES: The Amnesty International Club and International Students Club of Modesto Junior College are sponsoring a showing of the film "The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo," at 7 p.m. Thursday in Forum 102 on the east campus, 435 College Ave. Organizers said the documentary gives a voice to women who have suffered for years in silence. A discussion will follow the film. The event is free and open to the public. HLC MEETING: The guest speaker for Friday's Hispanic Leadership Council meeting will be Meg Gonzalez from the Central Valley Program, Tuolumne River Trust. The meeting will start at 7 a.m., and will be at the DoubleTree Hotel's Garden Terrace Cafe. The weekly meetings are open to the public.

WESTERN ART SHOW: The 16th annual Western Art Show and sale will be inside the Gene Bianchi Community Center from Friday through Sunday. The Oakdale Cowboy Museum and S.J. Auctioneering will offer a Western art auction and reception to kick off the event Friday at 6:30 p.m. Guests can preview portraits, bronzes, spurs, bits and other Western items before the auction, organizers said. The Women of Western Art is a nonprofit organization that promotes the visual arts through public forums. The art show will be open Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, go to www.womenofwesternart.com.
DINNER FOR ATHLETICS: Pitman High School Athletic Boosters will serve its first fund-raising dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, at the Turlock Senior Center, 1191 Cahill St. Dinner will be provided by Bon Appetit Catering. BUSINESS CLASS GEARED TO LATINO OWNERS: For Spanish-speakers, starting your own business and getting it off the ground is one hurdle. But taking that business to a bigger, better level is another one. How to get to that next level is the topic of a two-month class in Spanish presented by the Alliance Small Business Development Center, starting today. The class covers how to create and manage a business, develop business and marketing plans, get start-up money and prepare to expand. The cost is $99.
