In regards to "Firefighters can walk to grocery store" (Dec. 6, Letters): Exercise isn't the issue here; people's lives is. I'm not sure if the writer understands this, but firefighters have to take their trucks everywhere they go.
His idea of walking to the grocery store is all well and good, until it's your family who has the emergency. If firefighters walk to the store and get a call, they'll have to walk back to the station (most likely with groceries in their hands), then get in the truck and respond to the emergency. You wouldn't want them taking any longer than necessary in saving your wife, kids, etc. I'm sure there are more important things to worry and complain about, like maybe the war or illegal immigration.
Just a thought.
