It's time again to make some room for MAMA

Modesto music fans, it's that time of year again.

The Modesto Area Music Association has announced the nominees for its eighth annual awards. This year's nominees are filled with new names and new categories. The awards show will be Oct. 16 in the Gallo Center for the Arts. Also, for the first time, the public will be able to attend by winning tickets through area radio stations.

Changes to the ballot this year includes the additional categories Jam Band and Best DJ and the split of the old Hip-Hop/R&B category into R&B/Funk and Urban divisions. As in years past, all voting will be online at www.modestoareamusic.com. The nominees are:

Elsewhere around the Scene:

Longtime area arts promoter John Griswold has resigned from the organization he founded, the Modesto Arts and Music Organization, formerly known as John Griswold & Friends. In an e-mail, he said was leaving to pursue talent managing and booking.

"I feel like after 13 years of presenting concerts that it is time to move on and let someone else do it for a while," he said. "I am working with several Latin-flavored jazz groups to help them further their career."

He also is looking into the possibility of opening a small jazz club and organizing a new music festival, both centered around Latin sounds. He said his new venture should not conflict with his old group. "I want to thank ... the community at large for all the support and caring that has been given to me over the years. I will be back," he said. ...
