A 23-year-old Modesto man was grazed by gunfire early Saturday in the second drive-by shooting in three days in south Modesto, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department reported.
The victim was driven by a friend to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, where he was treated and released, said sheriff's Sgt. Brandon Kiely. To ensure his safety, the victim's name was not released.
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight in the 1100 block of Lassen Avenue, less than a block southeast of where 31-year-old Jaime Garcia was shot and killed Thursday night.
Kiely said it was too early to determine if the shootings are related, but detectives are investigating both shootings.
The victim in Saturday morning's incident was standing with a friend in front of a home on Lassen when a gold, two-door Saturn approached them.
Kiely said someone in the Saturn fired five or six shots at the victim, but he was able to take cover behind a parked vehicle. Nobody else was struck by the gunfire.
Meanwhile, detectives still are trying to identify whoever was involved in Garcia's death, Kiely said.
Witnesses told detectives they saw a white, four-door vehicle approach Garcia about 8:10 p.m. Thursday as he walked on Rutherford Street near Inyo Avenue, when someone in the vehicle fired multiple shots at him.
Witnesses were not able to see inside the vehicle, so detectives did not have any further descriptions.
Sheriff's detectives said Garcia's death may have been gang-related. They also said Garcia was on his way to buy diapers at a nearby market when he was shot.
The Sheriff's Department asks anyone with information about Jaime Garcia's death to call Detective Darwin Hatfield at 525-7100. Those with information about either shooting also can leave an anonymous tip by calling CrimeStoppers at 521-4636.
