During his life, Ernest Gallo routinely dodged the public spotlight. But now, in death, the Modesto winemaker is making headlines around the world.
Media from Bulgaria to Australia and beyond recorded international praise and reaction to Gallo's passing.
It was front-page news in virtually every major California newspaper Wednesday, and it was the talk of the town in Modesto.
A tribute section created on modbee.com attracted more than 100 postings from admirers across the nation.
Joseph Gallo, the chief executive officer of E.&J. Gallo Winery, expressed appreciation for all the kind words and memories about his father.
"On behalf of our families, I want to take this opportunity to personally thank the Modesto community for their outpouring of sympathy following the death of my father, Ernest," said Joseph Gallo, who assumed the CEO post from his father about seven years ago.
"Your support and compassion are greatly appreciated. Modesto always had a special place in the hearts of my father, Ernest, and my uncle, Julio. We are proud to call Modesto the home of the E.&J. Gallo Winery. Thank you, and as my father would say, 'all the best.'"
