HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES: Sheriff's investigators followed several new leads Tuesday in the Friday shooting death of a Salida store clerk, deputy Royjindar Singh said. They made no arrests and released no new information because it is an ongoing investigation, Singh said. "The detectives are still following up on some leads and (processing) new information," Singh said. "The whole robbery-homicide unit is on it, plus some detectives from the street crimes unit." According to the Sheriff's Department, a masked gunman shot and killed Randeep Singh, 29, in the Sisk Road Quik Stop gas station about 1:35 a.m. Two masked men entered the store to rob it, and one of the suspects shot Randeep Singh, not related to the deputy.
DEATH CALLED SUSPICIOUS: Police detectives are investigating a suspicious death in west Modesto, officials said Tuesday. Albert Castro, 49, was found dead in his house in the 300 block of Ash Street about 9:20 a.m., Sgt. Craig Gundlach said. Castro's ex-wife, Martha Castro, 45, found his body in the bedroom. Martha Castro had been unable to contact her ex-husband for several days, she told police. She went to the home Tuesday morning and tried to find a way inside. The back door was open, so she went in, Gundlach said. When she found the body, she called police. There were no obvious signs of trauma or foul play, Gundlach said. Castro may have died of natural causes, Gundlach said. However, the death is "suspicious" because items in Castro's home appear to have been moved, he said. Martha Castro is not a suspect, Gundlach said. "We interviewed her at the scene and she was very cooperative," he said. "They are separated but still on very good terms. She was just trying to check on him." The cause of death is under investigation. Police ask anyone who may have seen Albert Castro in the past week, or who has information about his death, to call CrimeStoppers at 521-4636.
FIGHT ENDS IN ARREST: Regina Kindred, 30, of Turlock and Richard Albert Tellez, 45, of Ceres, were sunning themselves in the driveway of Kindred's Lander Avenue home in Turlock at 2 p.m. Saturday when her ex-husband showed up. Tellez handed Kindred a small handgun, according to police, and she placed it on the trunk of a parked car. Tellez and the ex-husband, Steven Kindred, 43, of Turlock, got into a fistfight, according to police. After some rolling on the ground, Tellez "grabbed the gun on the trunk and fired one or two shots at Steven, missing him," Sgt. Sue Steele said. Tellez later was found at his home and said he fired one shot at the ground. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted homicide. The handgun was recovered.
