A 36-year-old Denair man is in custody after he allegedly killed his step-father on Thursday night, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release on Friday.

Jason Schaefer, 36, also allegedly assaulted several deputies while he was being booked into jail, the news release said.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a stabbing on the 2800 block of Marazan Street in Denair shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday.

The first deputy arrived and the suspect, later identified as Schaefer, exited the residence and was taken into custody.

“He was completely compliant with the arrest process,” Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Tom Letras said Friday morning by phone.

After detaining the subject, deputies entered the home, Letras said. Deputies found Shaefer’s step-father, Gregory Schaefer, 56, dead from a stab wound inside the home.

The victim’s wife — and suspect’s mother — and her sister were at the home at the time of the stabbing, Letras said.

While being booked, Jason Schaefer became combative and assaulted several deputies causing injury. One deputy was kicked multiple times and another suffered a blow to the face, busting his lip, Letras said. A Taser was used on the suspect to get him under control, Letras said.

Jason Schaefer, who is being held without bail, will face a murder charge. He will face additional charges for battery on a peace officer with injury.
