Pedestrian injured in hit-and-run in downtown Modesto
Modesto police interviewed a woman who left the scene of an accident in which the vehicle she was driving struck and injured a female pedestrian in downtown Modesto on Tuesday morning.
According to a witness, the driver was leaving the parking lot of the Smart & Final Extra! grocery store located at 18th and H streets at about 8:30 a.m.
James Jones said he saw the driver make a left-hand turn onto H Street and hit a pedestrian, who was walking toward the shopping center in the crosswalk.
The pedestrian flew into the air after impact, Jones said. The driver got out of her silver SUV, looked at the pedestrian on the ground and cried something like, "Oh, my God," a couple of times, Jones said.
The driver then got back into her vehicle and drove away, he said.
Shortly afterward, the driver's husband arrived at the scene and told police his wife panicked and left, said Officer Daniel Phillips. The couple live nearby, and police went to the home to speak with her, Phillips said.
The pedestrian's injuries were not life-threatening, Phillips said, and she was taken to a hospital.
Information was not available Tuesday morning on what charges the driver may face.
