Storm Large

Pink Martini singer Storm Large blows into the Gallo Center for the Arts just in time for the release of her new album, “Le Bonheur.” Large came up through the San Francisco club scene and gained national attention as a finalist on the CBS reality show “Rock Star: Supernova” in 2006. She shares singing duties with China Forbes in Pink Martini and travels nationally and internationally with the cult “little orchestra” with the big sound. Large will be accompanied by her trio for the Gallo Center CD-release show.

Oktoberfest

Sample brews and brats at the 31st annual Oktoberfest. The popular Modesto Chamber of Commerce event features a sampling of West Coast microbrews paired with traditional German fare including bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad. For nonbeer drinkers, the event also offers California wine tasting and a variety of nonalcoholic drinks. Enjoy live entertainment and midway games as part of the festivities, as well.

Eleanor Roosevelt in WWII

Storyteller Susan Marie Frontczak returns to the Gallo Center for the Arts as first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Her production is set in December 1942, after the United States had entered World War II. As Roosevelt, Frontczak will discuss the war, peace and individual responsibility. The program includes a Q&A with Frontczak in character and as herself.

The Black Irish Band

Celebrate 25 years of music and merriment with The Black Irish Band at its anniversary show this weekend. For a quarter-century, the popular foothills band of Patrick Michael Karnahan, Steve McArthur, James Nelson and Stan Emmons has been performing a mix of Celtic, Spanish, Italian and American music. The group has written and recorded 96 original songs and released 23 albums over the years.

Modesto Symphony Orchestra

Eighteen-year-old Juilliard School student Randall Goosby will play guest violin with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra for its “Pictures at an Exhibition” concert. Goosby will play Felix Mendelssohn’s popular violin concerto for the event, which also will include Samuel Barber’s “School for Scandal” overture and Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” suite. The Gallo Center for the Arts has teamed with Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center to present a preview of the gallery’s “In Your Dreams” exhibit in the Gallo Center lobby during the performances.

A Day on the Green

Spend A Day on the Green with Big Brother & the Holding Company with former Jefferson Starship singer Darby Gould. The group rose with the 1960s San Francisco psychedelic music scene and played famously with Janis Joplin. The event is a benefit for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) of Stanislaus County and Hope Haven West. Also performing will be Barry Melton (the co-founder and original lead guitarist of Country Joe and the Fish), Home Grown and Barry McGuire. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on site.
