1 Gallo Center gala
Bernadette Peters and Jakob Dylan perform separate, simultaneous shows as part of the Gallo Center for the Arts' second season opening gala celebration. Peters is a Broadway star with seven Tony Award nominations and two wins. Dylan is Bob Dylan's son and a rocker known as leader of the platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning band The Wallflowers. The elegant celebration is black tie optional.

Modesto Junior College celebrates its newly renovated auditorium complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and talks by Broadway legend Carol Channing ("Hello, Dolly!") and MJC alum and film star Jeremy Renner ("28 Weeks Later," "North Country"). There also are performances by MJC dance and string groups, a children's hip-hop workshop, storytelling, a costume display and more.

3 Assyrian music
The Assyrian Aid Society of America presents "Melodies From the East." The program features excerpts from the Assyrian operas "Gilgamesh" and "Inanna" and Assyrian pop singers. Special guests are Townsend Opera Players and Central West Ballet.

4 Blues rock
Southern California-based blues rockers Jay Gordon and the "New" Penetrators are coming at you for back-to-back shows. The Chicago blues-style axeman took home the best blues group/artist plaque at the 2007 South Bay Music Awards. Gordon has a new CD being released by the independent label, Kent Records, in the fall. Also playing is the Blue Cheese Blues Band.

5 Return of Cain
The bluesy Chris Cain Band returns with another rocking show from Eric Benson Presents. The band features Etta James Band veteran Dave Matthews on keyboards, Robben Ford Band vet Dewayne Pate on bass and Tyler Eng on drums. A full bar and appetizer menu are available at the all-ages show.
