HOME BASE: Modesto
PLAYERS: Alyssa Poppin, vocals/rhythm guitar; Ryan Poppin, drums; Logan Coats, lead guitar; and Kris Lewis, bass
SOUNDS LIKE: Poppin plays a rock-pop mix. Her sound is similar to Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne, Aly & AJ and Leona Lewis. Her influences include Gwen Stefani, Kansas, Shania Twain, Vanessa Carlton and Jim Croce.
BACKSTORY: Seventeen-year-old singer/songwriter Poppin moved with her family to Nashville when she was 6 years old and began taking music lessons. Her mother, Lillian, was involved in Music City's Christian music scene. By age 8, she began studying piano; by 10, she got the instrument she really wanted, a guitar. Poppin leads the worship band at Big Valley Grace Community Church. This is where she met two of her band members, Coats and Lewis. She calls her brother, Ryan, "the best drummer I know." Last year, she became serious about pursuing her own music and has since began playing around the valley. She recently completed her first professional project, a self-titled EP that was recorded in Hollywood with award-winning producer Andrew Lane.
QUOTE ME: "I like to play," said Ryan Poppin, quoting his favorite line from the movie "Wayne's World." "I could jam all night with these guys. Music is our passion and Alyssa writes the songs and melodies, but we all create the sound you hear. Some of us have been playing since we were 12 years old together. We know exactly what the other person is doing and we feed off of each other."
NEW MUSIC: Her self-titled EP can be purchased at her shows or downloaded from her MySpace page.
NEXT GIG: Show at 10:45 a.m. Saturday as part of the California Invitational Relays/The Meet: Blues, Brews & BBQ festival as part of the entertainment for the Run to the Relays 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run.
