The Beat: Ode to Anthony

HOME BASE: Modesto

PLAYERS: Bobby Atkins, vocals/piano/guitar; Rob Berhorst, guitar; Brent Jacobs, vocals/bass; and Jon Benton, drums

SOUNDS LIKE: Ode to Anthony calls itself an eclectic blend of rock, country and jazz. Its influences include The Beatles, Queen and Led Zeppelin.

BACKSTORY: Ode to Anthony began as a group of musicians that just wanted to earn some extra money as a cover band. It met at Barker's Music, where all the musicians either worked or shopped. Shortly after their first show, the members began writing their own music. The group's original sound blends the bandmates' various influences, from rockabilly to classic rock. Ode to Anthony plays, on average, six to seven shows a month from Modesto to Reno to San Francisco.

QUOTE ME: "Music is our way of expressing our experiences to others."

— Lead singer Bobby Atkins

NEW MUSIC: The band has a three-song demo available and will start working on a full-length album this month.

NEXT GIG: Show at 8 p.m. today at the Queen Bean in Modesto. No cover. Other shows April 10 at the Queen Bean, April 19 at Al's Billiards in Turlock and April 23 at the Fat Cat Music House & Lounge in Modesto.
