Groove into summer with two nights of hip-hop dance shows this week and help send Modesto Junior College students to a prestigious dance festival this summer.
Modesto Junior College presents back-to-back nights of Off the Beat 7: Hip Hop Dance Concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, June 14-15, at the auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on the east campus. Off the Beat 7 has a mix-tape theme and will feature an eclectic playlist of music that has inspired the choreographers to showcase their style and moves. The program will feature songs by hitmakers including Drake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Queen, Macklemore, Michael Jackson, Mac Dre and E-40.
The dance performance will feature more than 40 performers directed by MJC dance professor Kim T. Davis, along with guest choreographer Nhan Ho from California State University, Sacramento, Nick Bentley from Juline School of Dance, Jennifer Pirrone from Gregori High School and student choreographers Shean Bautista, Jessica Espinoza, Andrew Merrill and Rene Matute. This year’s Off the Beat show will raise money to send 13 dancers and two faculty members in the MJC dance program to Jacob’s Pillow Dance international festival in Massachusetts. Sinister Creature Con in Stockton
Stockton is is getting scary with the Sinister Creature Con this weekend.
The horror genre convention unfurls Saturday-Sunday, June 10-11, at the Stockton Arena. The event will feature guest stars, comic artists, cosplayers and more. Some of the headliners include “Rocky Horror Picture Show” stars Barry Bostwick (Brad) and Nell Campbell (Columbia), Academy Award-winning makeup artist and “Face Off” judge Ve Neill, “Nightmare on Elm Street” star Heather Langenkamp and “Ginger Snaps” star Katharine Isabelle.
The convention runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 Saturday, $15 Sunday, or $25 general or $35 early admission for both days. For more information, visit www.sinistercreatureconstockton.com.
Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band
The Gottschalk Music Center Concert Band will perform in the annual Golden Gate Park Band Festival this weekend.
Formed in 1989 by Ernie and Karen Bucio, the band was led by Ernie Bucio until his death in 2011. Matt Cover and Ulices Chavez have taken the baton and now conduct the ensemble. The band will play at noon Sunday, June 11, in the park’s amphitheater as part of the two-day celebration of community concert bands from across the state.

Pride in the Park Celebration
MoPride’s annual Pride in the Park celebration has found a new park to call home.
The LGBTQ-event is moving from its previous location at Graceada Park to John Thurman Field. The event also has moved forward from its previous date in the late summer or early fall to the month of June. Festivities will be from 1 to 8 p.m Saturday, June 17, at the ballpark. The celebration will include drag shows, a beer garden, live entertainment, a kids zone and more. Admission is $5. For more information, visit www.mopride.org.
