STOCKTON Chris Chiles was thrilled to get his Downey High soccer team to the quarterfinals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 playoffs. Next year, though, he wants more.
The first-year coach looked on with pride as his Knights battled much of Tuesday night, losing 4-2 to powerful Franklin of Stockton.
While the Knights (13-4-6) didn't win, their ability to frustrate Franklin was clear by the two red cards picked up by the Yellowjackets.
"We may not have beat Franklin, but we hurt them," said Chiles, whose club outshot the 'Jackets 17-11. "We had our opportunities, but we just couldn't do it. The best thing about this team is they keep fighting."
The Yellowjackets (16-4-3) scored in the 14th minute. Alexis Leon got a ball in front of the goal, but failed to convert the goal as keeper Luis Magana deflected the shot. The reboundwent to Mike Her, who lobbed it into the net.
Downey answered six minutes later when Jose Hernandez threw the ball in to teammate Francisco Chavez. Chavez headed it toward his brother, Julio, who squared up and found the open net. On the throw, goalie Jose Andrade failed as he tried to punch the ball out of play, leaving the net exposed.
Franklin took a 2-1 lead on a penalty kick with just seconds remaining in the half.
In the second half, Franklin's Jesus Alvarez scored with 22:29 left, but Downey's Misael Torres scored four minutes later after teammate Alex Padron headed the ball to him. Torres fired to his right to cut the lead to 3-2.
GOLDEN VALLEY 3, LODI 1, at Golden Valley The Cougars got goals from Hugo Hernandez, Matt Hubbard and Daniel Byrne to subdue the Flames and advance to a semifinal game Thursday at 7 p.m. against either Davis (Yolo) or Napa at Stockton's Lincoln High.
Memo Ramirez had four saves for the Cougars, who improved to 16-2-3.
HILMAR 4, ESCALON 1, at Hilmar Alex Bettencourt scored two goals and the Yellowjackets also got scores from Jordan Bettencourt and Jason Pedro as Hilmar cruised. The Yellowjackets earned a second-round game Thursday in Angels Camp against Bret Harte, which throttled Livingston 3-1.
RIVERBANK 3, CALAVERAS 0, at Riverbank Christian Arbor, Ricky Vigil, Adrian Pantoja all found the net for the Bruins, who rode the seven save of Hugo Calderon to the shutout victory. Ryan Maxey made seven saves for the Redskins, whose season ended at 11-8-2. Riverbank (17-7-4) earned a second-round home game against Patterson, which handled Ripon 3-1.
