Lee scores 6 goals in Mustangs' playoff win

Six Stanislaus District boys water polo teams qualified for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 Championships, which tipped off Saturday at Johansen High School.

Only one will be advancing to next Wednesday's quarterfinals at Tokay High in Lodi.

Tyler Lee scored six goals, Robby Earle and Chris Terwilliger had four goals apiece, and Neal Cadra added three scores, as Modesto Metro Conference champion Oakdale kicked off the postseason with a 20-6 victory over Franklin of Elk Grove.

The Mustangs, who also got eight saves from goaltender Garrett Porter in the victory, will meet St. Mary's of Stockton Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Tokay.

"We're definitely gonna have our work cut out for us," Oakdale coach Alan Stender said. "St. Mary's is making a run for the section championship this year. It would be nice to see someone else win a section title other than Davis or Jesuit, just not at our expense.

"The kids are in the right frame of mind. They've watched St. Mary's and they've studied them pretty good. We know their strengths and some of their weaknesses, and the best thing is that the kids aren't afraid of them."

Turlock saw its season come to an end with a 15-4 loss to St. Mary's. Chris Callahan scored two goals to lead the Bulldogs, who trailed 7-1 after the opening period.

Having standout senior Taylor Sellers under the weather with the flu didn't help Turlock's cause.

"We ran into a buzz saw. We needed to capitalize on every opportunity and we weren't able to do that today," Turlock coach Steve Feaver said. "St. Mary's was the better team and they'll go a long ways in the tournament.

"With Sellers being our catalyst and not being 100 percent, I think we just didn't put up our best effort today."

MMC runner-up Johansen was knocked out of the tourney courtesy of a 15-6 loss to Napa. Kyle Sessa and Max Green scored two goals each for the Vikings, who finished 20-12.

"We had a good year. Any time you win 20 games in a season, you've done a pretty good job," Johansen coach Brent Bohlender said. "The team we played was faster than we were and better reacting."

Central California Conference champion Golden Valley dropped a 12-9 decision to Fairfield despite getting six goals from Taylor Rocha, while Jesuit pinned a 14-6 loss on Merced.

Downey standout Tim Richard scored four goals but it wasn't nearly enough to keep the Knights from falling 18-5 to Lodi in the final match of the day.
