STOCKTON — It was a long time between losses for the Modesto Junior College women's water polo team. After winning 17 consecutive games, the Pirates lost to Santa Rosa 8-5 in the semifinals of the Big 8 Conference Championships at Delta College.
Modesto (18-2) bounced back to beat Diablo Valley College 9-2, finishing third in the tournament and second in the Big 8 overall. Sierra beat Santa Rosa in the title game.
Erica Crain and Meghan Devlin scored three goals each against Diablo Valley. Katie Vengris scored three goals in the Santa Rosa game. Seeding for the Northern California tournament will be announced today.
MJC MEN'S WATER POLO, at Big 8 Championships — The Pirates finished fourth in the conference tournament, losing to Diablo Valley College 18-10 and American River 9-7. Tyler Bolton and Erik Arakelian each scored three goals against DVC.
MJC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, at Cosumnes River Tournament — The Pirates beat Corsairs 69-55 to earn a spot in today's consolation championship. Modesto (1-1) will play Hartnell at 10 a.m. Jessica Paine made a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give the Pirates a 39-33 lead. Kristen McClure led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
COLUMBIA MEN'S BASKETBALL, at Las Positas Tournament — Key defensive stops in the final 10 minutes and a noticeable size difference that resulted in 42 rebounds helped the Claim Jumpers beat Gavilan 64-46. Simeon Walker led Columbia (1-1) with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
CSUS WOMEN CROSS COUNTRY, at San Francisco — Denali Foldager finished 25th overall as the California State Stanislaus women finished 12th in a 25-team field in the NCAA West Regional Championships. Foldager finished the 6,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 18.2 seconds at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park. Seattle Pacific's two-time defending national champion Jessica Pixler won in 20:08.9. MJC WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY, at Belmont — The Pirates qualified for the state meet by finishing fifth at the Northern California Championships. Shannon Peters earned All-NorCal status, coming in ninth in 19 minutes, 24 seconds. Teammate Sophia Villalobos was 15th (19:50), one spot shy of All-NorCal honors.
MJC MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY, at Belmont — The Pirates finished seventh at the Norcal Championships, making it the fifth consecutive year they have qualified for state. Anthony Mallory made the All-NorCal team in 13th place (21:55). Ronnie Bruce just missed being named All-NorCal, coming in 15th (21:59).
CSUS VOLLEYBALL, at Turlock — The 18th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves swept California State University, Stanislaus 3-0, winning 25-21, 25-18, 25-15. Lianne Vicchio had 10 kills and 14 digs for the Warriors (10-18, 4-16 CCAA).
MJC WRESTLING — Getting pins from two wrestlers, the Pirates split two matches Saturday, beating Lassen College 34-24 but losing to Shasta College 36-18.
