MERCED -- Marquez Barron gave Merced high the boost it needed on Friday night.

Barron scored on an 18-yard pass from Rudy Monteon and then recovered a fumble in the end zone for another TD as the Bears beat Turlock 41-14.

That helped the Bears (4-5 overall, 4-1 CCC) win an important Central California Conference matchup.

Turlock (0-9, 0-5) scored on a 5-yard pass from Kevin Kramer, who also dazzled the crowd with a 63-yard run.

MOTHER LODE LEAGUE

CALAVERAS 14, ARGONAUT 10, at San Andreas -- The Redskins (5-4, 3-1 Mother Lode League) recorded a mild upset over The Bee's seventh-ranked small school Mustangs (5-4, 2-2). Chris Ussery's 34-yard, second-quarter TD run in put Calaveras ahead 7-0, but Argonaut evened the score on a 2-yard plunge by Zach Devaney.

After the Mustangs took a 10-7 lead on Russ Ellison's 26-yard field goal, the 'Skins took the lead for good on Monti Wilson's 4-yard TD run.

LINDEN 27, BRET HARTE 14, Angels Camp -- Austin Alvarez converted two nearly impossible third-down situations, and led the Lions (5-4, 2-2 Mother Lode League) to a win over Bret Harte (3-6, 1-3).

In the second quarter, Alvarez faced a third-and-30, but delayed after the snap then dashed 73 yards for the first down. It would have been a touchdown, but Bret Harte nose guard Jared Alwyn ran down Alvarez, catching him on the 10 to save a TD. Two plays later, Luke Nicol ran it in from the two.

Later in the second quarter, Alavarez faced a third-and-20 situation, but he lofted a 27 yard pass to Clint Baskin for the first down. Three plays later, Nicol ran it in from the 3.

Bret Harte played the second half without a quarterback. Backup Matt Brechtel was injured while playing defense and could not continue.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE

TURLOCK CHRISTIAN 30, WATERFORD 24, at Waterford -- Eagles quarterback Cody Smallwood ran for a 48-yard touchdown and threw for another, leading TC to Southern League victory. Smallwood's long run was the opening score of the game, and he hit Geoffrey Retemyer on a 25-yard strike that gave the Eagles a 23-6 lead in the second quarter. Waterford QB Philip Tubera hooked up with Thomas Longworth on a 14-yard scoring play to make it 23-12 heading into the final quarter. Tubera found Russell Longworth in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard strike to make it 23-18, but TC pulled away on Nikko Jennings' TD.

HARVEST CHRISTIAN LEAGUE

MILLENIUM CHRISTIAN 20, BIG VALLEY 16 CHRISTIAN -- Despite two touchdowns from Johnathon Golliher, Big Valley couldn't hold off Millenium Christian. The deciding score came when a Millenium defender picked up a fumble and carried it into the end zone in the fourth quarter for a touchdown.
