LIVERMORE -- Columbia College had three going against it in its basketball season opener in the Las Positas Tournament on Friday night: a 7-footer named Kyle Luckett, its own former coach in Denny Aye, and 30 turnovers. That combined for a 79-67 loss to Chabot.

Luckett did not play in the first half, which allowed Columbia to keep it close (42-39) at the half. But he had 14 points (8 on dunks) after he took the floor. Columbia was led by Evan Scott's 17 points with 10 each from Travis Mayor and Simeon Walker. Today, Columbia plays Gavilan College at 1 p.m.

BUTTE 68, MJC 62, at Elk Grove -- The Modesto Junior College women outsocred Butte College 15-2 in the final 5 minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Roadrunners in the Cosumnes River Tournament. "We are proud of the way all 11 of our players kept competing in the second half," said coach Mike Girardi. Katie Kaech scored 15 for the Pirates and Kristen McClure 11 while Christie Hobby had 5 rebounds. The Pirates play again today at 2 p.m.

MJC WOMEN'S WATER POLO, at Stockton -- With four goals and three assists from Erica Crain, the MJC women swamped Sacramento City College 17-2 in the Big 8 Championships at Delta College. Five other Pirates had five goals each and Meghan Devlin had five assists and three steals. MJC plays Santa Rosa today at 10:20 a.m. with the winner advancing to the championship game at 6:30 p.m.

MJC MEN'S WATER POLO -- With six goals and three steals from Tyler Bolton, the Pirates beat Sierra College 15-5 in the Big Eight Championships. The win guarantees MJC a berth in the NorCal tournament next weekend at West Valley College. Three Pirates scored two goals each and Jeremy Day had 9 saves in goal. MJC plays Diablo Valley College at 8 a.m. today with the winner advancing to the final.

MJC MEN'S SOCCER, at Elk Grove -- With goals from Quinn Harter and Eric Cortez, the Pirates were able to overcome an 0-2 deficit and forge a 2-2 with Cosumnes River College. Harter had been playing goalie, where he made four saves, but came out in the 50th minute to play offense for the Pirates (10-4-5).

MJC WOMEN'S SOCCER, at Santa Rosa -- Despite eight saves from keeper Krista Messer, the Pirates (12-6-1, 7-4-1) lost 1-0 to Santa Rosa Junior College in a Big Eight game.
