It's time to step to the lanes and help the less fortunate in our community. The Annual Turkey Bowl presented by the United Way of Stanislaus County is rolling Saturday at McHenry Bowl. Squad times are at either 12:30 or 2:30 p.m.
Proceeds help to fund the work of many of the non-profits in the county. No bowling skills are required. This is simply a for-fun event to raise money for those less fortunate. Teams of four will be bowling two games. If you don't have a full team, go ahead and sign up and you will be placed with other individuals.
Cost is $50 per person, or $200 for the team of four. Prizes will be awarded for Best Team, Worst Team, Highest Individual Score, Best Dressed Team, Worst Dressed Team, and scoring a turkey (bowling lingo for three strikes in a row).
To help partner agencies save their limited funds for their programs instead of janitorial supplies, rolls of toilet paper will be collected to donate to the agencies. For every roll of TP you bring in, you get one raffle ticket. To sign up or for more information call Pam at McHenry (571-2695) or Debbie at United Way (523-4562, ext. 108).
The California Bowling Writers are starting their sixth year of "Phone Cards for the Troops" this month. The bowling writers buy telephone cards to send to the men and women serving abroad. This provides troops with a link during the holiday season to their families who are waiting for them at home.
Over the years, letters from recipients and their families have expressed the gratitude they feel to have received the cards that offered them a small taste of home and family that they miss during this season. If you would like to donate something, please mail to or leave the envelope at McHenry Bowl (3700 McHenry, 95356). Write "phone cards" on the envelope.
Local bowler Milo Coronado fired a perfect game to start the Scratch 6-Gamer Tournament at Yosemite and never looked back. He finished the qualifying rounds in first place at a plus-329 and waited on the last rung of the stepladder to meet Freddy Irvin for the final match. Coronado rolled a 247 to Irvin's 235 to take the title and $347 first prize and earned a spot in the year-end Tournament of Champions. The last qualifier of the year is set for Dec. 6. The Tournament of Champions will be Dec. 27.
Ed Tanner must have liked the trip up the hill to Black Oak Casino for the McHenry No-tap tournament. He scored a nice 889 series to take the top spot for the men. Gary Norseen finished second with an 832. Filling in the third spot was Will Inselman who posted an 828 set. On the women's side, Karel Ahart topped the list with her 812 set. Betty Tull scored a 799 for second, and Gin Quinton's 796 score was good for third.
Rose Baker, Lisa Clyde, and Diane Davidson teamed up to win the November Ladies Trio Tournament at McHenry. Clyde paced the team with her 667 series including a no-tap 266 game. The three tallied a 2,566 for the win. The threesome of Sandy Delaney, Rainy Tanner, and Donnie Miller came in second scoring a 2,354 total. In third, Brenda Eisenhower, Gin Quinton, and Sis Daleth rolled a 2,270 set.
It's local tournament time starting next week. Events run for two weekends, so check your calendars, gather your team, and turn in your entries. Pick up your entries at either bowling center.
