UConn junior Maya Moore became just the seventh unanimous choice on The Associated Press' preseason All-America team Tuesday, garnering all 40 votes from a national media panel. It's the third straight year a player has been a unanimous choice in the preseason. She was joined by teammate Tina Charles, Stanford's Jayne Appel, Ohio State's Jantel Lavender, and Virginia's Monica Wright. It was the fifth time two players from the same team made the All-America squad. Moore was player of the year last season, averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 rebounds as UConn went 39-0. ... The 200-foot mast on the monster trimaran that will represent the United States in the America's Cup came crashing down during a sail on the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, snapping in two as it hit the rear beam. None of the crew were injured while the yacht was 20 to 30 miles off Point Loma. The one that broke Tuesday is believed to have cost $10 million.
German swimmer Paul Biedermann has a thigh injury that could prevent him from facing Michael Phelps in the short-course World Cup competition, Nov. 14-15 in Berlin. Biedermann beat Phelps in the 200-meter free at the world championships in July. ... Two-time Olympic and world champion Britta Steffen also pulled out.

At Valencia, Spain, Andy Murray came back from a long-term wrist injury by beating wild card Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the Valencia Open. The fourth-ranked Murray, who had not played since the U.S. Open, won 22 of 26 first-serve points and broke Gimeno-Traver five times. The top-seeded Scot next plays Leonardo Mayer. Today, the U.S. plays Sweden and Canada takes on Finland. ... Final papers have been signed closing the sale of the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes to the NHL. The NHL paid about $140 million for the team.
