Roundup: Lee throws for 6 TDs in Downey win

Statistics and records are fun to celebrate, but Downey High was in desperate need of a win Friday night, after having lost its last four games.

The Knights got that badly needed win, as Jason Lee fired a school-record six TD passes and threw for 485 yards in a 49-26 Modesto Metro Conference victory over Beyer.

The Knights (2-4, 1-1) much-maligned defense played its role, too, as Michael Roberts-Foreman returned an interception 25 yards for a TD. It was one of six turnovers the Knights forced, including Cody Shannon's late interception return for a TD.

Lee and the Knights' passing game was again the story, however, as the tore up Beyer's secondary with short and long passes. He was 33 of 58, with four TDs to Javon Kelly (8 catches, 167 yards) and one each to Corey Keller (13 catches, 229 yards) and Logan Garrett (7 catches, 37 yards).

Beyer (1-5, 0-2) was able to slow down the Knights early -- Lee had just 33 yards in the first quarter -- and the game was tied at 14 at halftime.

Downey owned the second half, however, as Lee threw three third-quarter TDs. He had a 72-yard scoring toss to Keller, then hit Kelly from 45 and 3 yards. He tossed his last TD to Kelly early in the final quarter, another 5-yard toss.

Lee, who entered the game as the nation's No. 3 passer with 387 yards a game, now is averaging 401 yards a game. He has 2,804 yards in seven games, with a school-record 26 TDs and 12 interceptions.

Valley Oak League

MANTECA 41, CERES 0, at Manteca -- Marquis Miller (20 carries, 92 yards, two TDs) handled the running the ball and the No. 4 large-school Buffaloes' (5-2, 3-1) defense dominated the game for a shutout win over the Bulldogs (0-7, 0-4). Reggie Bell got the Buffaloes going with a 60-yard punt return, his first of two on the night, and Matt Barber (11 of 17, 92 yards) tossed an 8-yard TD to Robert Ladiges, and Brad Hatfield's two PAT kicks made it 14-0 in the first quarter.

OAKDALE 56, WESTON RANCH 14, at Stockton -- The top-ranked large-school Mustangs (7-0, 4-0) continued their roll through the VOL by routing the Cougars (3-4, 2-2). Oakdale begins its rugged three-week run next week, facing Manteca, Sierra and rival Sonora close the regular season.

EAST UNION 27, CENTRAL VALLEY 21 (OT), at Ceres -- Reserve quarterback Teejay Gordon dashed 3 yards up the middle for the overtime touchdown that clinched the VOL upset win for the Lancers (3-4, 1-3).

East Union rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit and twice denied the Hawks (2-5, 0-4) near the goal line in the final moments of regulation. Central Valley's missed field goal in overtime again opened the door, and East Union walked through on three straight runs by Gordon.

Gordon, a junior running back, filled in at quarterback for the injured Dennis Johnson (ankle). The junior overcame three interceptions in the first half, the third resulting in a Central Valley touchdown.

Western Athletic Conference

LIVINGSTON 39, ORESTIMBA 14, at Newman -- The Wolves (5-2, 1-1 WAC) rebounded nicely from last week's loss to Hilmar, as Robert Garcia (11 carries, 111 yards) and Charles Brown (15 carries, 106) each broke 100 yards in the win over the Warriors. Garcia ran for two TDs in the first half, but the big play was Brian Alvarez's (6 of 8, 83 yards) 23-yard strike to Jesus Gonzales, giving Livingston a 26-7 halftime lead.

Orestimba's Ravonne Pious (12 of 30, 211 yards) als ran for an 83-yard TD in the third quarter to make it 26-14, but Brown answered with a 26-yard scoring run to put it away.

Southern League

TURLOCK CHR. 42, DELHI 12, at Livingston -- Cody Alldrin (3 catches, 128 yards) usually hurts teams with his receptions, but he was also a runner this week, scampering for TDs of 79, 1 and 48 yards as the Eagles (5-2, 1-1) beat the Hawks (0-7, 0-2) in the SL. James Riley (13 carries, 102 yards, two TDs) also had two first-half TD runs as the Eagles rolled to a 22-0 halftime lead.

Even quarterback Robbie Smallwood got into the act, with six carries for 140 yards, inclulding a 46-yard TD run.

DENAIR 56, WATERFORD 26, at Waterford -- Dylan Souza rushed for 138 yards, and his two fourth-quarter TD runs highlighted an explosive ending to the game, as the Coyotes topped the Wildcats.

Denair (3-4, 1-1) led 35-6 after a half, scoring touchdowns on big plays from Jose Galvan (49-yard run, 88-yard kickoff return) and Codee Watts' 6-yard run and his 4-yard TD pass to Michael Hilton.

Waterford (2-5, 1-1) tried to rally late in the game, scoring 20 points in the final quarter, but the Coyotes matched TDs with the Wildcats to stay ahead. The teams combined for 41 points in the quarter, as Waterford's Phil Tubera (16 of 30, 271 yards).

Watts was 6 of 12 for 117 yards passing for Denair.

Harvest Christian League

BIG VALLEY 36, ELLIOT CHR. 13, at Lodi -- D.J. Plikta (17 carries, 149 yards) and Jonathan Gollier (16 carries, 124 yards) led the Lions (5-2, 2-0 HCL) to their rout.
