TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors extended 25th-ranked Chico State in the first and third games, but the result was a 3-0 volleyball sweep for the visitors Wednesday night at Warrior Arena.
The Warriors (1-8, 7-10) were coming off their first California Collegiate Athletic Association win, over Humboldt State, but lost to Chico State 25-21, 25-11, 25-22. Twice, the Warriors extended the Wildcats to 20-20 standoffs. Sophomore Lianne Vicchio scored 11 kills for a Stanislaus team. Amanda Pielstick led in digs with 21 for the Warriors, who started fast with a 9-2 first-game lead.
Nicki Brown had six kills and 19 assists for the Warriors. Makenzie Snyder totaled 16 kills for Chico (15-4, 6-3).
Stanislaus will play host to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night at 7 o'clock.
• MJC WOMEN'S WATER POLO — The Pirates (12-5, 2-1) prevented a game-tying shot by stealing the ball with 2 seconds left to clinch a 9-8 Big-8 Conference victory over Sierra at Rocklin. Modesto annexed its 11th straight win by controlling the match, leading 9-6 until Sierra (5-4, 2-1) parlayed two turnovers into goals in the final minutes.
Meghan Devlin led MJC with three goals and Eric Crain had two. Goalie Kashi Tomicich registered nine saves.
• MJC MEN'S WATER POLO — Eric Bryant, Tyler Bolton and Erik Arakelian totaled three goals apiece for the Pirates (12-5, 2-1), who defeated Sierra 12-7 for their fifth straight victory. Modesto pulled away from Sierra (1-5, 0-2) after the teams were tied 5-5 during the second period.
• MJC WRESTLING — Sam Orozco (125) and Josh Delgado (133) both won in the early weight classes as the Pirates held on to defeat Santa Rosa 27-22 in Big-8 action on the Bear Cubs' mat.
