CHOWCHILLA -- Isaiah Burse was too much for Chowchilla High, as the senior quarterback finished with 213 yards offense and ran for two TDs to lead No. 3 small-school Modesto Christian to a 40-20 victory over the Redskins.
The game was tied at 14 at halftime -- all the scoring had come in the first quarter, with Kevin Roya's 15-yard run and Burse's 18-yard scramble accounting for MC's score -- but the second half belonged to the Crusaders (3-0).
Burse (107 yards rushing, 106 yards passing) got things rolling shortly after halftime, as Burse scored on a 17-yard run and teammate David Sjelin scored from 12 yards for a 26-14 lead. Sjelin scored minutes later from the 11, then added his third TD on a 2-yard run to open the fourth quarter, finishing off the Redskins (2-1).
MC's Aaron Brown ran for 92 yards, had nine tackles and intercepted a pass.
SIERRA 17, PATTERSON 6, at Manteca -- The No. 4 large-school Timberwolves rode Jarrod Daniels (25 carries, 151 yards, two TDs) to a close victory over the No. 4 small-school Tigers (1-2).
Daniels' 11-yard TD run in the first quarter gave Sierra a 7-0 lead that they took into halftime, but Patterson struck on its first possession of the second half when Nathan Shelton broke free on a 57-yard TD run. The PAT kick failed, though, preserving Sierra's lead.
Sierra answered quickly, taking the kickoff and driving downfield before going up 14-6 when Daniels burst in from the 2 and Anthony Hall added his second PAT kick.
Hall's 37-yard field goal late in the third quarter made it 17-6, and Sierra's defense made sure it stayed that way.
EDISON 34, MERCED 3, at Merced -- It was almost like he knew it was coming.
Merced coach Rob Scheidt clasped his hands over his head and winced as his quarterback scrambled to get a play off in the closing minutes Friday.
After the snap, Rudy Monteon scrambled for his life, spinning and bouncing off defenders before being stripped and turning the ball over.
Another disastrous play in an overall disastrous night for Merced, which fell to 0-3 after losing to Edison 34-3 at Don Odishoo Field.
"It's frustrating ... we want to win games," said Scheidt, whose team turned the ball over six times. "Our effort is continuing to improve, we just need to eliminate the mistakes.
"If we don't turn the ball over here and there, this is a different ball game. But nobody cares about the ifs, ands or buts, we have to go out there and take care of it."
Taking care of the ball was a problem all night for Merced, but the most painful may have been the first.
After Merced's defense stuffed Edison on a fourth-and-1 play at mid-field, it looked like they could get on the board first.
On the first play Monteon hit Juan Valencia in front of the Merced sideline, but Edison's Tevin McDonald stripped the ball and recovered the fumble.
"Turnovers are a part of the game, you just have to keep trucking and forget about the play," Monteon said. "It's very frustrating. We are a young team. Just barely getting together, we will figure it out."
Edison eventually turned the turnover into seven points on a 4-yard run by Dewayne Scott. It was the first of four touchdowns scored following Merced turnovers.
Scott finished the game with 108 yards and three touchdowns. Edison quarterback Max Schuh threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns.
CENTRAL CATHOLIC 21, VISTA DEL LAGO 13, at Sacramento -- The No. 1 small-school Raiders (3-0) had trouble holding the ball, losing four fumbles, but quarterback Dylan Swartz (12 of 26, 197 yards) threw a TD to help them beat Vista del Lago (1-2).
Swartz tossed a 56-yard TD pass to Jack Killian in the first quarter, but the Raiders couldn't shake Vista del Lago.
Each of the Raiders' first two scores, including Billy Flamion's 23-yard run in the second quarter, were answered.
Central took a 14-13 lead into halftime, though, because Sebastian Hernandez had converted both PAT kicks. Central went up 21-13 on fullback Darian Edwards' 10-yard run in the third quarter and Hernandez's third PAT kick.
Edwards and Craig Jones (seven carries, 68 yards) are only sophomores.
