MERCED -- Johansen High, struggling to score the first two weeks, rode quarterback Armando Hernandez to a 44-30 win over Golden Valley Friday.
Hernandez passed for 160 yards and two TDs, including a 15-yarder to Michael Brown that put the Vikings (1-2) ahead for good late in the first quarter.
Hernandez hit Cameron Clay with a 25-yard score for a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, then the defense provided a key play in the second half.
With GV (2-2) trying to score, Michael Uperesa knocked the ball out of the quarterback's hand and Chris McLoud took it and ran 81 yards for a TD.
"We started with an inexperienced team, and it's taken us a couple weeks to get everyone in the right spots," Johansen coach Jason McCoy said. "Everyone looked comfortable tonight.
"Our offensive line did a great job making contact and sustaining their blocks. You could see it coming together."
The hard-hitting Vikings also forced five turnovers. GV quarterback Tyler Arnsberg ran for three scores.
ATWATER 54, BEYER 31, at Atwater -- The Falcons (2-1) scored 25 unanswered points to open the game, and the Patriots (1-2) were unable to catch up des
Atwater's Nathan Sanchez (11 of 15, 258 yards, 3 TDs) and Beyer's Justin Usiak (15 of 31, 182 yards, two TDs) were busy putting the ball in the air. Sanchez also ran for 78 yards.
MODESTO 48, TURLOCK 28, at Modesto -- Klayton Miller tossed four TDs and passed for 165 yards, and the Panthers (1-2) pounded out 288 rushing yards to rout the Bulldogs (0-3). James Ingram got things going with a 3-yard TD run, then Miller tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to Andre Barry to bring Modesto to within 14-13 after a quarter.
Barry would later catch TD passes of 36 and 7 yards from Miller, while Ingram scored on a 2-yard run and teammate Arquel Rogers brought the crowd to its feet with a 75-yard burst in the third quarter.
Modesto and Turlock have been playing the Little Big Game since 1921, making it the longest continuous rivalry in California, and Turlock leads 68-38-5.
ORESTIMBA 20, TURLOCK CHRISTIAN 13 -- Mike Suesue had a three-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. But that was just a warmup. The senior running back broke open a close game with a 93-yard kickoff return to put Orestimba (2-1) ahead 14-7.
Turlock Christian had gone ahead early in the second quarter when Cody Alldrin caught a 30-yard pass from Robbie Smallwood for a TD. It was on the kickoff following that TD that Suesue took off. He also had 76 yards rushing for the game. Alldrin had five catches for 110 yards and Smallwood was 11-26 passing for 177 yards and the TD.
