The Modesto High volleyball team appears to have picked up right where it left off last season. As the dominant team in the Modesto Metro Conference.
The defending champion Panthers tipped off MMC play Tuesday night with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22) victory over visiting Downey.
Gianna Gallo was everywhere and everywhere else all at once for the Panthers (6-2), recording 34 assists, 11 digs, and two aces. Alex Garrett added 13 kills while Michelle Couchman had five blocks.
The Enochs Eagles were also victorious in their league opener, beating host Johansen 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-15), improving their overall record to 10-3-1. Taylor Kamiya led the way for Enochs with a team-leading six aces and 11 assists.
With four more wins, the Eagles will match their entire victory output for their first two years as a varsity program.
Orestimba is off and running in the Western Athletic Conference. The Warriors improved to 10-1 on the young season with Monday's 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-15) league-opening win over Patterson.
Carlee Felber had a big night for Orestimba with a team-leading 25 assists and eight digs.
Golden Valley ran its record to 10-1 overall with Tuesday's 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-14) victory over Central of Fresno. Macie Smith set the table for the Cougars with 26 assists. Gina Bandoni recorded seven kills, Chelsea Franco had 12 digs and Celeste Castillo controlled the action at the net with five blocks for GV.
Oakdale began defense of its Valley Oak League crown on Monday with a 3-1 (25-13, 25-10, 25-27, 25-11) victory over Central Valley Monday in Ceres that improved the Mustangs to 8-2 on the year.
Sisters Jaci and Domi Powell played key roles in the victory for Oakdale, with co-captain Jaci delivering 13 kills and six aces; Domi adding three blocks.
