MJC men finish 13th in big race

FRESNO — The Modesto Junior College men's cross country team finished 13th among 28 teams in the Fresno Invitational. The Pirates placed 13th out of 28 teams and were the sixth Northern California team to cross the line.

The Pirates' Roberto Alvarez was 18th overall with a time of 21 minutes, 43 seconds over the four-mile course. Also scoring for MJC were Ronnie Bruce (33, 22:03), Anthony Mallory (47, 22:18), Lucas Velasquez (82, 22:56) and Armando Ibarra Espinoza (137, 24:47).

Hartnell's Daniel Tapia won the race in 20:35.

MJC WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY, at Fresno — Led by Shannon Peters, the Modesto Junior College women's cross country team finished 11th among 20 teams in the Fresno Invitational, considered one of the top meets in the state. Peters finished 34th overall over the 3.1 mile course with a time of 20 minutes, 11 seconds. Nina Moore of Glendale Community College won in 18:24. Also placing for MJC were Sophia Villalobos 21:08 (71st overall), Jasmine Pahal 21:35 (85th), Amanda Moreno 21:40 (90th), Jeniffer Perez (102) and Zulema Gonzalez (146th).

MJC WOMEN'S GOLF, at Palm Springs — Modesto Junior College's women's golf team finished sixth among 13 teams in the two-day Desert Classic. Amanda Agostini was the top golfer for Modesto, with a two-day total of 78-84—162, followed by Emily Szabo (81-82—163), Ashley Olsen (86-80—166), Aijalon Rivas (87-89—176) and Kayla Grey (89-88—177). Sacramento City College was the top team.

MJC WOMEN'S WATER POLO, at San Luis Obispo — Modesto Junior College's women's water polo team won two games in the second day of the Central Coast Tournament, beating Ohlone 15-2 and Delta College 17-7.

MJC WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL, at Stockton — Modesto Junior College's women's volleyball team went 1-3 in the Delta College Tournament. The Pirates lost 14-25, 24-26, 17-25 to Cosumnes River College, 22-25, 15-25, 13-25 to Feather River Community College, 25-15, 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 10-15 to Solano Community College and beat San Jose City College 25-10, 25-23, 25-13. In the victory, Caitlin Benning had 9 kills; she had 31 for the tourney, along with 11 aces.

CSUS VOLLEYBALL, at San Francisco — After having won five of seven preseason matches, the California State University, Stanislaus women's volleyball team lost its second conference match in a row, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-17), to San Francisco State. Lianne Vicchio led the Warriors (5-4, 0-2 Central California Athletic Association) with eight kills. Colleen Sullivan had 17 assists as the team's setter and Jessica Lehner had four service aces.

PACIFIC VOLLEYBALL, at Oxford, Ohio — University of the Pacific's women's volleyball team won the Miami Best Western Invitational by beating the home team 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 25-12) on Saturday. The Tigers are 7-1 and 6-0 on the road. It was the second tournament title UOP has won. Senior Natalia Tomaszewska (Marklowice, Poland) served six straight points to give UOP the lead in the final game.
