Modesto Babe Ruth team falls in Regional title series

WATSONVILLE -- The Modesto 16-18 Babe Ruth team won't be making a return trip to the World Series this year. The team, coached by Bobby Swedberg, lost 9-1 Tuesday night to to the San Gabriel Valley 16-18 All-Stars in the second game of the Pacific Southwest Regional championship tournament.

Modesto came out of the losers bracket to force the second game by beating San Gabriel 2-0 earlier in the evening. That was San Gabriel's first loss of the tourney.

San Gabriel advances to the Babe Ruth World Series in Moses Lake, Wash., from Aug. 15-22. The all-star team won the World Series in 2007 for the third time in four years.

Modesto made it to the World Series last year in Ohio, but lost in the final round.
