RANCHO CUCAMONGA — The Modesto Nuts grabbed immediate control with five runs in the first inning Wednesday night en route to a 6-3 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

The Nuts greeted Quakes starter Michael Kenney (1-3) with a two-run double by Scott Beerer, a two-run homer by Jason Van Kooten (his eighth) and an RBI single by Jay Cox.

Charles Blackmon increased the lead to 6-1 with a solo homer (his sixth) in the fourth inning.

Modesto righthander Cory Riordan (7-6) took full advantage of the support by striking out nine, walking only one and giving up two runs in seven innings.

Austin Chambliss pitched a scoreless eighth and Craig Baker — having snapped his 28-for-28 save streak Monday night against Bakersfield — yielded an unearned run in the ninth.

Modesto, 3-2 this season vs. Rancho Cucamonga, will finish its three-game series tonight at the Epicenter. The Nuts begin a six-game homestand Friday night against the Stockton Ports.
