RANCHO CUCAMONGA A night after scoring 12 runs and getting 19 hits in a 15-12 loss, the Nuts turned cold on Tuesday, losing 5-1 to Rancho Cucamonga.
The Quakes only California League All-Star, Alex Torres, gave up only five hits and struck out six including the side in the seventh. He seated the Nuts 1-2-3 in four innings.
But Torres left after eight, and the Nuts greeted reliever Eddie McKiernan with a homer to account for the lone run, then a double. That's when McKiernan was pulled and the treat ended.
Nuts pitcher Kenny Durst limited the Quakes to six hits through seven innings, but things fell apart in the eighth. Durst left after giving up a triple. Chris Malone came in and gave up back-to-back singles, hit a batter, then gave up a walk and another single.
That allowed the Quakes to score four runs.
