Both Modesto teams advanced after the first day of play in the Central California State Babe Ruth 16-18 Tournament at Davis High School.
The host Modesto team, which last year advanced to the Babe Ruth World Series, beat Bullard 4-0 as Nathan Gonzalez pitched seven shut-out innings, striking out 10 and allowing only one hit. Hunter Adrian singled in the second and came home on an Ian Fregosi double. Fregosi then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Barber.
The sixth was almost a carbon copy, as Adrian singled then scored on another Fregosi double. Craig Beevers moved Fregosi to third then he scored on Hayden Maurice's single.
The Modesto Astros beat Delano 10-5 as David Herrera came on in relief and pitched well. San Benito beat Madera 11-7 and Tracy beat Hanford 9-3.
CRUSHERS SECOND, at Park City, Utah -- Modesto's California Crushers took second in the 14-under division of the 14th Triple Crown Sports Girls Fastpitch World Series. The Crushers lost 2-1 in extra innings to Bad to the Bone of Salt Lake City. The Crushers took a 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles from Monica Reno and Erica Aguilar, in the second inning. Bad to the Bone tied it in seventh, then the teams went to an international tiebreaker in the eighth where a two-out, bloop single to right by Chelsea Billin produced the winning run. Reno won the In the Longball Derby by crushing a ball 226-feet, besting 98 other competitors.
WATER POLO -- The Modesto-Stanislaus under-16 boys water polo team lost two games in the California State Games on Saturday, going 0-for-4 in the tournament with one game left to play. In a 13-4 loss to Orcutt, Nick Serratos scored two goals and Julian McClellan and Myles Garton had one each. Goalie Zach Hazelwood had 12 blocks. In a 10-2 loss to Buchanan, McClellan and Serratos had the goals.
