Davis High's baseball team showed its versatility during two victories in the 20th Ron Vermeulen Tournament on Thursday. The Spartans belted out hits in their 10-8 win over Merced, then relied on pitching for a 1-0 victory over Sierra.

Davis will host crosstown rival Johansen today at 9:30 a.m., and the Spartans (2-1) are battling Mitty of San Jose (3-1) and Davis of Yolo (2-0 with two games today) for first in their six-team bracket.

The four bracket winners will meet Saturday at 10 a.m., with the victors playing at 1 p.m. at Beyer High for the title.
