Downey High graduate Blake Smith, drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers last month in the second round (he was the 56th overall pick), has signed a contract and soon will report to the Midwest League's Great Lakes Loons -- the Dodgers' Class A affiliate in Midland, Mich.

Smith, a pitcher-outfielder-designated hitter as a junior for Cal, earned All-Pacific 10 Conference honors by batting .319 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs.

Last summer, he helped Team USA to a 24-0 record and was his team's leading hitter with a .327 average. He was named the team's seventh best prospect in Baseball America.
