SONOMA — Fresh from competing in the 24 Hours of Lemans last weekend, Patrick Long debuted in the NASCAR Camping World Series West by winning the pole for the Bennett Lane Winery 200 at Infineon Raceway on Friday.

Long, who normally drives in the Camping World East Series, had a speed of 91.891 mph over the 1.9-mile road course. That was just a hair faster than last year's winner, Jason Bowles. The teammates will start side by side on Saturday.

Escalon's Eric Holmes, who leads the points standings, was third fastest, followed by Sprint Cup rookie Joey Logano, David Gilliland, David Mayhew, Brandon Davis, Greg Pursley, Boris Said and Brian Wong. Jim Inglebright of Fairfield was 13th and Mike David of Modesto was 20th fastest. Oakdale's Wes Banks was 29th fastest and Ross Strmiska of Stockton was 31st.

Forty cars will start today's race at 12:30 p.m.

TRUCKS RAINED OUT, at West Allis, Wis. — The Camping World Truck series race at the Milwaukee Mile has been postponed by rain and is rescheduled for today.

FORMULA I DISPUTE, at Silverstone, England — Formula One intends to sue the eight teams that announced plans for a rival series next season — the biggest crisis to engulf the sport since the championship began in 1950.

The governing body accused the Formula One Teams Association of "serious violations of law." The breakaway came after Ferrari, championship leader Brawn GP and six other teams failed to resolve a dispute over the introduction of a $65 million budget cap for next season.

Ferrari has been part of Formula One from the outset. In addition to Brawn GP, the rebel group includes McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso. It means F1 would lose some of its biggest names , including world champ Lewis Hamilton and points leader Jenson Button of Brawn.

MAYFIELD CASE — Jeremy Mayfield's next chance to have his indefinite drug suspension lifted will be at a July 1 hearing in federal court. A U.S. District Court judge has added Mayfield's preliminary injunction request to his calendar. If the ruling goes in his favor, Mayfield could compete at Daytona International Speedway.
