STOCKTON One game behind. Two teams to catch. Four home games left.
That's the breakdown as the Modesto Nuts steam toward the end of the California League's first-half race. The Nuts closed the gap Wednesday night as Connor Graham (4-3) pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings and Jay Cox launched his team-leading ninth home run to spice a 6-2 win over the Stockton Ports.
Modesto returns to Thurman Field tonight to begin a four-game series against the Lancaster JetHawks. San Jose's 6-1 win over Visalia encouraged the Nuts, who trail both teams by one.
The Nuts, 10-2 vs. Stockton, pulled away with five runs in the sixth off starter Tyson Ross (1-5). A single by Maikol Gonzalez preceded Cox's homer to left. Matt Repec's triple, Jeffrey Cunningham's single and Radames Nazario's two-run ground-rule double finished Ross.
