Warriors in 10th at golf event

BLAINE, Wash. -- The Cal State Stanislaus golf team began the NCAA Division II Golf Championships much like most events this season.

"We start slowly and have to battle back," first-year coach John Cook said. "This is how we usually start this year."

The Warriors, laboring along with many other players at par-71 Loomis Trail, shot 24 over par and are tied for 10th in the 20-team field. They trail by 15 strokes -- Barry and Sonoma State are the co-leaders -- with three rounds to play.

Stanislaus was ranked 10th, the first time the team was ranked all season in the top 15, entering the tournament.

Narrow fairways, heavy rough, trees and hazards tested the 108 players who reached the nationals. Overnight rain also made the rough more difficult.

Danny Hoff paced the Warriors on Tuesday with a two-birdie four-bogey 73. He's tied for 13th on the individual list. "Hoff hung in there. Par was a good score today," Cook said.

Bryan Kiss finished with a 77, J.T. Cockerill had a 78 and freshman Teddy Schrier posted an 80.

"This is a great venue for the championship," Cook said. "It's still anyone's game at this point."
