This first meeting in what's being billed as the "Civil War" between Modesto Christian and Chowchilla high schools indeed was civil, and in football terms, it was a war, too.
It ended with handshakes, a prayer and Modesto Christian coach Mike Parsons presenting Chowchilla coach John Henson with a "Civil War" trophy and proclaiming the game as possibly the best he's been a part of at the high school level.
Chowchilla 46, Modesto Christian 41.
In the end, it actually came down to an inability to score, as a pass by Crusaders quarterback Isaiah Burse on fourth down was broken up before the teams exchanged fumbles on back-to-back plays in the final two minutes.
Basketball star Reeves Nelson, producing his biggest game yet on the football field, stripped the ball from Fred Gaines and fell on it to give the Crusaders (2-1) a final shot. But Raymond Nelson was stripped on the next play after catching a nine-yard pass from Burse, and David Dejager recovered for the Redskins (3-0). Chowchilla ran out the clock.
The game had few penalty flags and several big plays.
Reeves Nelson scored two touchdowns, including a 76-yard interception return. The Redskins had just taken a 24-15 lead and were threatening again at the end of the first half after Gaines returned a Burse interception 62 yards to the Modesto Christian 31-yard line.
But Nelson reached his long arm in on Chowchilla quarterback Rob Diepersloot as he cocked his throwing arm, knocking the ball loose. Nelson grabbed it in the air and reached the end zone with one second left before halftime.
His second score gave the Crusaders a 41-38 lead with 8:38 remaining, on a 73-yard catch from Dustin Hayes, who replaced Burse for one series on a night when there were as many cramps as points.
Chowchilla then drove 62 yards in just more than four minutes and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 7-yard run by Kyle Espinola.
