White, Red teams defend home alley

The San Joaquin Travel League began with its first meet at McHenry Bowl last Sunday. The elite league is made up of some of the highest-average youth bowlers in Northern California and is divided into three divisions.
McHenry Bowl grabbed the top two spots in the Classic Division on its turf. The McHenry White team earned 28 points to lead the field. Team members include Seth Jaggers, Kyle Simi, Erik Haines, Phillip Graham and Travis Blansit. McHenry Red holds a close second with 27 points. Sarah Cowan, David Graham, Anthony Firpo, Donney Marquardt and Nathan Fiske round out the lineup. David Graham rolled the high game for boys with his 288. Kathelynn Goddard of Granada Bowl in Livermore and Julie Scheaffer of Manteca Bowl each shot a 214 game and shared the high girls game.
Granada Bowl controlled the Major Classic Division, finishing first and second. Granada No. 2 earned 24 points to take the lead with Austin Stuber, Shawn Donohue, Brandon Kline-Felton, Michael Bumanlag and Andy Madding. One point out in second is Granada No. 3 with 23 points. Payton Giambrone, Riely Chin, Alex Stuber, Vincent Salinas Piper and Ashton Laine make up the team. Bumanlag scored the boys' high game with a nice 290. Christopher Davidson of McHenry scored with a 287. Kayley Olvera of McHenry posted a 237 game, high for the girls.
Pacific Avenue Bowl in Stockton topped the Junior Classic Division with 29 points. Team members are Patrick Maragos, Jacob Araya, Forrest Kritzer, Brock Slaybaugh and Harrison Fong. In a close second is the McHenry team of Kameron Simi, Jacklyn Davidson, Austin Castro, Josh Tambagan and Joseph Fried. They earned 28 points. Slaybaugh recorded the high boys game with a 204, and Monica Sanchez of Tracy's West Valley Bowl rolled a 224, high for the girls.
Chris Parreira won the men's side of the McHenry No-Tap when he rolled a 965 series. His set included two no-tap 300 games, a 230 and a handicap of 135. Don Rodrigues ended in the second slot at 918 with Rich Salazar third at 917. Anja DeBoer topped the women's list with her 894. In second at 861 was Marty Nard, followed by Gin Quinton with an 855.
In local league action, Kerry Harwood, bowling in the His & Hers league, rolled his first sanctioned 300 game. Congrats Kerry!
The "55 and Older" No-tap rolls at 1 p.m. Friday at Yosemite with check-in at 12:30. This is a singles tournament with men's and women's divisions.
The annual Modesto USBC Dinner is Saturday at the Executive Grand Hotel on Sisk Road (formerly Holiday Inn). The evening will include installation of officers, award presentations and the Hall-of-Fame induction of Wayne Garber. Cocktail hour starts at 7 p.m. with dinner at 8 and the program and installation to follow. Tickets at $25 are still available from the bowl desks or an association officer.
The September edition of the Scratch 6-gamer is set to roll at noon Sunday at Yosemite. Check-in starts at 11 a.m. The sweeper will be rolled on the PBA Shark oil pattern. The top 24 bowlers on the annual money list will earn a spot in the year-end Tournament of Champions, where first place guarantees $1,000.
