Agostini: Good riddance to preseason football

last updated: August 30, 2008 08:24:21 AM

Reading time, two minutes:

Superstars are injured, few starters play at all and the fans pay top-dollar for glorified scrimmages. Ladies and gentlemen, wave farewell to another thrilling NFL preseason.

Tom Brady's right foot is shaky and the Patriots go 0-4. Bill Belichick says they'll be OK if they sneak in some film on opposing coaches, like the good ol' days.

This week's oxymoron, and apologies to fellow Bee staffer Stu Rosenberg: Fantasy relevance.

The 49ers' Alex Smith: second string, confidence gone, his future in question.

The 49ers lost 10 of 11 at one point last season. One more slump like that and the Mikes are exchanged: Nolan for Martz.

The Bengals' Chad Johnson changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. Too bad. We understood "Pacman" was available.

The Raiders' new tackle displays a lot of mobility and ... wait a minute. That's JaMarcus Russell!

Just plain wrong: Olympics boss Jacques Rogge sticks his head in the sand regarding the Chinese gymnasts, then rips Usain Bolt for celebrating the fastest 100 meters in history.

One big reason why the "Redeem Team" won't end USA success: the career revival of Dwyane Wade in Beijing. The Olympics is good business for the NBA.

Meanwhile, 180 degrees away: the Spurs' Manu Ginobili, Argentina, injured.

The Jamaican sprinters took a lot of pressure off the bobsled team.

Not exactly a daring prediction: Modesto's rowing gold medalist Erin Cafaro will throw out the first ball at a Giants game. She's a manic Giants fan (her hero was Will Clark).

High school sports are under way. Who will be the next German Fernandez (Riverbank)?

If bad luck was money, Oregon's Nate Costa (Hilmar) would be a rich man.

Yes, Stanford was fortunate to beat Oregon State, but: The Cardinal plays with more life under Jim Harbaugh.

More Billy Beane Fatigue: Carlos Gonzalez, the "future star" acquired in the trade with Arizona for Dan Haren, was demoted to Sacramento after he batted .204 the last two months.

Top-seed Ana Ivanovic was stunned by No. 188 Julie Coin at the U.S. Open. Appalachian State just switched sports.

If QB Kevin Riley holds his own tonight, Cal beats Michigan State.

The Warriors lost Baron Davis to free agency and Monta Ellis to injury. Warming up in the bullpen is Stephen Jackson.

The announcement before Week 1 we've heard too many times: We're serious about cracking down on bad behavior, so we're suspending six starters for our season opener against Southwestern Mongolia Teachers College.

Michael Strahan missed the entire 2007 preseason and still guided the Giants to a Super Bowl title. Which is why the Colts shouldn't stress about Peyton Manning.

Welcome back: Candlestick Park.

The Chargers' Shawne Merriman will play on a knee that requires reconstructive surgery. Who does he think he is -- Tiger Woods?

A dead heat on what's more difficult: watching an NFL preseason game, or unloading preseason tickets.
