Summer winding down for local bowlers

Two end-of-season tournaments are set to roll next week to finish off the summer season schedule.

The Pot-of-Gold Tournament is rolling at Yosemite and is open to qualifying teams from the summer leagues. The Grand Prix Tournament rolls at McHenry and guarantees $1,000 for the first-place team. Teams from Grand Prix leagues are eligible to bowl.

With the summer leagues winding down, it's time to plan for the upcoming fall programs.

Leagues for beginner to advanced bowlers are offered at both bowling centers for teams, couples, or individuals. Adult, senior, and youth venues are available offering trip packages, bowling merchandise, and the new Bicycle, Nascar, and NFL programs.

Yosemite is offering a handicap doubles league called the PBA Experience on Monday evenings at 9 p.m. McHenry has openings for men's teams on Tuesday and Thursday.

For McHenry information call Pam or Dave at 571-2695, and for Yosemite call Wayne at 524-9161. Information can also be found at the bowls' Web sites at www.yosemitelanes.com or www.mchenrybowl.com.

THE EVERYBODY LOVES Raymond Fund-raising Day is set for Sunday, Sept. 7 with squads at noon and 2 p.m.

The event will benefit the Waring family and 20-year-old Raymond Waring, a past youth bowler and employee of McHenry Bowl diagnosed with bone cancer.

The cost is $25 per person and includes bowling, a BBQ lunch, and a T-shirt. A silent auction and raffle will run during the event and donations are needed.

All money collected will be donated to the family. Call 571-2695 to sign up, make a donation, or for more information.

CHRIS PARREIRA topped the men's side in the Friday No-tap at McHenry when he rolled a 934 set. Ron Leal was next in line with a 905, followed by George Baca posting an 875 score.

On the women's side, Julie John set the pace with her 870 series. Shirley Laurenz scored an 868 for the runner-up spot. In third, at an 864, was Alice Christensen.

• This Sunday, the monthly scratch 6-gamer at Yosemite will honor Willie Taylor in the 3rd Annual Willie Taylor Memorial Tournament.

Taylor, an avid scratch bowler and member of the Modesto Hall of Fame, died suddenly three years ago.

The sweeper will start at noon, with check-in at 11 a.m.

There will be $500 added to this tournament that will run on the "house" shot. Two "Lane Master" bowling balls and other prizes will be raffled to benefit the fund.

• The Yosemite Senior No-tap is set for this Friday starting at 1 p.m. Check-in is at 12:30 p.m.

FIFTEEN LOCAL youth bowlers will make their way to Santa Cruz this weekend to receive recognition as a member of the prestigious NorCal All-Star teams.

Chosen to be among those honored from over 15,000 youth bowlers were Scott Christensen, Scott Boyle, Gregory Davis, Christopher Davidson, Myles Duty, David Shaefer, Clarence White, Rose Brown, Kaylene Folks, Rebecca Johnson, Nathan Fiske, Will Garber, Joseph Fried, Jacklyn Davison and Sierra Vitale.

Over $33,000 in prize checks for the 59th Annual Peach Classic Tournament at McHenry should be ready for release this coming Tuesday.

Tournament official Dave Ramsey is still awaiting several average verifications before the list can be made official. Updated prize standings can be found on www.mchenrybowl.com.

THE PRIZE CHECKS for the 3rd Annual Save Mart Summer Doubles Tournament held at Yosemite may be delayed until early September pending average and prize-winning verifications.

USBC tournaments are required to finalize a prize list and prepare the checks within 30 days of the tournament's end. Extensions may be requested if necessary. Last year the Peach paid out late after waiting for verifications.
