It looks increasingly as if the Bay Area's two NFL rivals will enjoy a friendly get-together during training camp.
49ers coach Mike Nolan laid out details Monday for a shared practice with the Raiders over the next few weeks. "It's been discussed, but it hasn't been etched in stone," Nolan said.
The teams have reached agreement on several key elements. The practice would take place at the Raiders' training camp in Napa and would be closed to the public, like all Raiders practices. The session would not be a scrimmage, but there could be a competitive element to some drills.
"Practicing against Oakland," is how Nolan put it.
No date has been set, but the plan is to do it before the 49ers-Raiders exhibition opener in Oakland on Aug. 8.
RAIDERS -- Oakland signed former Kansas City safety Greg Wesley to a one-year contract on Tuesday, adding depth to the position on the eve of training camp.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus said Wesley was happy to remain in the AFC West and looked forward to playing against the Chiefs twice this season.
Wesley gives the Raiders depth at safety behind starters Gibril Wilson and Michael Huff. Wilson signed a $39 million, six-year contract that included about $16 million in guaranteed money after winning the Super Bowl last season with the New York Giants.
Huff, Oakland's first-round pick in 2006, is moving to his more natural free safety position after playing his first two seasons at strong safety.
Wesley will compete with fourth-round pick Tyvon Branch, special teams star Jarrod Cooper and Hiram Eugene for a backup spot with the Raiders.
The Raiders had been seeking better tacklers at safety after allowing a league-worst 4.8 yards per carry last season.
Wesley, a third-round pick out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2000, was released last week by the Chiefs. He was a starter for his first seven seasons before being relegated to a backup role last season. Kansas City had little need for Wesley after drafting North Carolina State safety DaJuan Morgan in the third round in April and he had asked the Chiefs to be traded or released.
Oakland reports to training camp in Napa today with the first practice being scheduled for Thursday.
49ERS -- Though all eyes are on the quarterback competition, several other spots are up for grabs as the 49ers report for training camp Thursday.
Jeff Ulbrich is the leading candidate to start at the "ted" linebacker spot, but he will have to fend off challenges from Brandon Moore and rookie Larry Grant. Dontarrious Thomas is in line to back up Patrick Willis at the "mike" spot on the other side. At right guard, Tony Wragge and rookie Chilo Rachal will compete to start until David Baas comes back. Nolan said he hopes to get Baas back in time for the season opener. ...
The 49ers are confident that all of their draft picks will have their names on the dotted line before Friday's first practice. Three remain unsigned -- first-rounder Kentwan Balmer, third-rounder Reggie Smith and fourth-rounder Cody Wallace.
Only six of the NFL's 31 first-round draft picks have signed. One of them is New York Jets tight end Dustin Keller, the player selected at No. 30, just after Balmer. Keller received a five-year, $12 million deal, with $6 million guaranteed.
COLTS -- Tony Dungy is certain Peyton Manning's left knee will be ready for the Colts' season-opener. Heck, the Colts coach said he thinks Manning might even play during the presesason. On Tuesday, Dungy said he was optimistic the Colts' biggest question heading into training camp -- Manning's valuable knee -- could be resolved quicker than most people expect. Manning had surgery last week to remove an infected bursa sac, a procedure doctors said would require four to six weeks to heal.
QUICK HITTERS -- Chargers defensive end Luis Castillo agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2014 valued at about $43 million. The deal will pay Castillo a guaranteed $17.5 million in signing and roster bonuses. ... Six-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher signed a one-year extension with the Bears reportedly worth $18 million. ... Seven-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Pace is close to returning from a shoulder injury, but will not be cleared by the Rams for full contact at the start of training camp. ... The Titans agreed to terms on a multiyear contract with rookie tight end Craig Stevens, a third-round draft pick out of Cal.
