MJC women ruffle Feather River

Stanfield scores six goals in soccer rout; last-second shot dooms Stanislaus men again

It may have limped into the playoffs, but the Modesto Junior College women's soccer team was in familiar territory Saturday.

The Pirates, who have made it to the third round of playoffs two consecutive years, defeated visiting Feather River 9-0 in the first round of the Northern California playoffs.

Modesto (14-5-2) will travel to American River on Tuesday. The Beavers have been to the Final Four the last four years. American River (15-3-3) beat West Hills 3-0 Saturday.

Vanessa Stanfield scored six goals for Modesto, three in the first half as the Pirates took a 4-0 lead. Lucero Villasenor scored once and had three assists for Modesto.

"I'm just glad my girls came out and went from the gun to the end of the game," coach Steve Aristotelous said. "They were real relentless. We had a tough schedule to get us ready for playoffs."

Modesto's defense contained Feather River's Thaisa Moresno and Mayara Bordin, the top two scorers in the state. Moreno had 44 goals and Bordin had 30 goals and 50 assists for the Golden Eagles (16-7-1) this season.

Aristotelous rested a number of injured players in the last few weeks, including Lence Montero and Carly Genzoli, who each recorded an assist Saturday. He said he can't do that anymore.

"We have to try to go at American River like we did Feather River," Aristotelous said. "We can't have any lulls in the game."

Men's Soccer

FRESNO CITY 5, MJC 0, at Fresno -- For the second time in two weeks, the Rams were just too much for the Pirates. In the first round of the Northern California playoffs, Luis Ruiz led Fresno City (16-4-2) with two goals and an assist.

A former Central Valley Conference opponent, Fresno beat Modesto 4-1 in a nonconference game on Nov. 6. Mark Weigand had 10 saves for Modesto (11-7-3).

Men's Basketball

SEATTLE 60, STANISLAUS 59, at Seattle -- Ricky Berry banked in a 30-foot shot at the buzzer to give the Warriors their second consecutive heartbreaking loss at the Elgin Baylor Classic.

Stanislaus (0-2) led tournament host Seattle the entire game, paced for the second night in a row by Calvin Westbrook, who scored 13 points.

Duane Jones had made two free throws with 30 seconds left to keep the Warriors ahead 59-57. Saint Martin's had defeated Stanislaus 116-113 in overtime on Friday.

Women's Basketball

TAMPA 75, STANISLAUS 64, at Turlock -- Freshman center Katie Busi of Calaveras led the Warriors (0-2) with 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals at the Eva Schicke Memorial Tournament.

Sheena Walton, a honorable mention All-American pick, scored a career high 31 points and had 11 rebounds on 11 of 17 shooting to lead Tampa (1-1). Cal State Dominguez Hills beat Northwest Nazarene 77-68 in the other game.

MJC 102, MISSION 42, at Santa Clara -- The Pirates improved to 3-0 with 21 points from Sughey Cervantes. Four other Modesto players scored in double figures including Kelsey Wingo, who scored 10 points and pulled down eight of the Pirates' 62 rebounds. Modesto led 55-19 at halftime.
