Roundup: It's Modesto High again in girls tennis

For the fourth consecutive year, the Modesto High girls tennis team has dominated the Modesto Metro Conference.

The Panthers beat host Downey 7-0 on Thursday, sealing their fourth straight undefeated season (15-0) in league play.

No. 1 singles player Katie Eng beat Cathy Lee 6-0, 6-1, setting the tone.

In the closest match of the day, the Modesto No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Yang and Preeti Bangalor beat Courtney Nelson and Kendall Burke 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

As the MMC's No. 1 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section team playoffs, the Panthers will play a home match on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

JOHANSEN 7, ENOCHS 0, at Enochs -- Kayleen Court of the Vikings rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 win over Shelby Rubia in No. 1 singles. Johansen finished 10-5 in MMC play; the Eagles were 3-12.

CERES 4, CENTRAL VALLEY 1, at Ceres -- McKenzy Harden, Logan Harden and Angie Prak notched decisive singles wins for the Bulldogs (12-3, 11-3 Valley Oak League), who had already clinched a playoff berth with a win over East Union on Tuesday.

Volleyball

OAKDALE 3, CERES 0, at Ceres -- Alexis Evans had 12 kills and Taylor Harper five aces for the Mustangs (18-3, 11-2 Valley Oak League) in a 25-13, 25-14, 25-17 win over the Bulldogs (3-18, 3-10).

Oakdale plays host to Sonora (12-1 VOL) on Tuesday. Should Oakdale win, the teams will share the title. If the Wildcats take it, they'll earn an outright championship.

Jode Johnson had five digs and six blocks for Ceres on Thursday and Bulldogs coach Kassi Baker said, "Johnson was phenomenal at the net tonight. Oakdale had to adjust their hitting to get the ball away from her. She had 12 touches as well as her six blocks."

SONORA 3, CENTRAL VALLEY 0, at Sonora -- Hanah Blume of the Wildcats got six kills and served eight aces in a 25-6, 25-9, 25-8 victory.

HILMAR 3, CENTRAL CATHOLIC 1, at Hilmar -- Caitlin Benning had 17 kills for the Yellowjackets (26-3, 13-1 WAC) in a 26-24, 25-9, 23-25, 25-9 win over the Raiders (26-6, 8-5).

MARIPOSA 3, WATERFORD 0, at Mariposa -- Corina Stephens had 13 kills in helping the Grizzlies (10-3 Southern League) to a 25-10, 29-27, 25-15 triumph.

Soccer

RIVERBANK 1, ESCALON 0, at Riverbank -- Jose Cerda of the Bruins (12-2 Trans-Valley League) scored a second-half goal off an assist from Ramiro Calderon. Riverbank goalie Juan Luna made 11 saves.

MODESTO CHR. 1, HUGHSON 0, at Hughson -- Nick Leon-Guerrero scored a first-half goal off an assist from Colin Hoogendoorn for MC (10-8-1, 6-8 TVL). Crusaders goalie Chris Hutton made six saves.

WATERFORD 3, MARIPOSA 0, at Mariposa -- The Wildcats (19-0-4, 12-0-2 SL) clinched their first boys Southern League title. David Alvarez, Carlos Navarrete and Juan Gutierrez scored and goalie Victor Gutierrez made six saves.

Wildcats coach Barry Wixom said, "Waterford has never beaten Mariposa at Mariposa until now. Our defense played really well.

"The kids worked very hard and all are very elated."

BIG VALLEY CHR. 8, STOCKTON CHR. 1, at Modesto -- Jared Lunsford had three goals for BVC (16-2-1, 6-0 Harvest Christian League), which opens the playoffs at home against Don Pedro on Nov. 6.

Boys Water Polo

JOHANSEN 14, BEYER 1, at Johansen -- Brad Fuller scored seven goals as the Vikings (27-4, 14-0 MMC) overwhelmed the Patriots (4-10).

Johansen won all four league titles (boys and girls varsity and JV). It's the first time that's happened in the MMC.

DAVIS 15, ENOCHS 6, at Davis -- Tyler Bolton scored nine goals and Josh Delgado three for the Spartans. Cole Carroll had five for the Eagles.

MODESTO 10, DOWNEY 6, at Modesto -- Chris Gallardo had six goals in helping the Panthers (10-2 MMC) win. Tim Richards had four goals for the Knights.

OAKDALE 10, CERES 6, at Oakdale -- Goalie Garrett Porter had 25 saves and Andrew Van Cleave five goals to help the Mustangs top the Bulldogs.

PITMAN 11, TURLOCK 8, at Turlock -- Josh Day had five goals in helping the Pride (7-5 Central California Conference) top the Bulldogs (9-3), who won the league title despite the loss. Pitman jumped out to a 4-1 first-period lead.

Girls Water Polo

JOHANSEN 13, BEYER 3, at Johansen -- Andie Plunkett had four goals and Jodi Hanson three as the Vikings (25-7, 14-0 MMC) drubbed the Patriots (4-10).

MODESTO 16, DOWNEY 0, at Modesto -- Erica Austin had three goals as the Panthers finished league play 11-3 and tied for second with Davis.

DAVIS 12, ENOCHS 1, at Davis -- Lauren Lancieri had four goals for the Spartans in their win over the Eagles.

OAKDALE 11, CERES 7, at Oakdale -- Amanda Meyers, Jessica Meyers and Alyssa Barker scored twice to lead the Mustangs to victory.
