Beek’s Blog: Dahl is OK, headed back to Asheville for playoffs

Tourists’ roster to be bolstered by Dahl’s return as they gun for the South Atlantic League title

Sports news scattered with occasional travel, music

When David Dahl ran into the wall in center on Tuesday night, the team other than Modesto most interested in his immediate well-being was Asheville, which is gunning for a South Atlantic League title.

I asked Dahl upon his arrival in Modesto on July 23 whether he would be shipped back to Low-A for the playoffs, since the Tourists have all but clinched a postseason berth. At the time he mentioned that going back was something that had been discussed, but it was confirmed Thursday by Jeff Bridich, Colorado’s senior director of player development, that Dahl would be going back soon.

For now, Dahl is on the Nuts’ temporarily inactive list with a slighly jammed wrist, and Kyle Von Tungeln has been activated. Von Tungeln, who hasn’t played since July 8 and has been on the disabled list since July 13, is in Thursday’s lineup - batting eighth and playing center.

Dahl was hitting .305 with 10 homers and 41 RBI in Asheville at the time of his promotion, and has hit .247-2-6 in 18 games with the Nuts.

Saturday’s game against Visalia is the team’s annual Star Wars Night, and fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite character from the space opera that debuted, yes, 37 years ago. It’s been one of the more-popular annual promotions, and combined with Saturday’s post-game fireworks show it should draw a good crowd to John Thurman Field.

It also gives me the chance once a year to retell the lame joke I made up 10 years ago, when the Modesto A’s were looking for a name change with the departure of the Oakland affiliation. There was some brief talk about a team nickname tie-in with the characters created by Modesto native George Lucas, and names such as the Vaders, Skywalkers or LightSabers were bandied about.

I always thought that a Star Wars-theme would have been a great idea, because at the end of the season the team’s best player could have been deemed Wookie of the Year.

Yes, I’ll be here all week. Enjoy Eddy Arnold.
