Steven Gerrard has been passed fit but Fernando Torres will miss Liverpool's Champions League clash with Lyon.

The two key players both missed Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Sunderland - the Reds' fourth Premier League loss of the season - with groin injuries picked up on international duty.

Gerrard will return to skipper the side when the French club arrive at Anfield on Tuesday, but manager Rafael Benitez is taking a more cautious approach with Spain striker Torres.

"Gerrard is now fine, he has trained normally today and will play against Lyon," revealed Benitez.

"But Fernando is not close enough to fitness to be considered. He will miss this one but I hope he will be okay to play against Manchester United next weekend."

Meanwhile, Javier Mascherano and Emiliano Insua are both expected to be fit for the Group E European showdown.

The two Argentineans were only considered fit enough to make the bench at the Stadium of Light.
