SANTA CRUZ — A tiny bird found near Ano Nuevo State Park turned out to be a rare marbled murrelet fledgling. A little girl and her parents reported the bird to chief ranger Gary Strachan, who recognized it as a threatened species. Only around 2,000 marbled murrelets, who spend most of their lives at sea, are thought to remain in California and Oregon.

The bird was taken to the Department of Fish & Game's Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center in Santa Cruz, where it was kept overnight then released with a good chance of survival.
