VALLEY

New Melones Reservoir — Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing and Danny Layne of Fishn' Dan's Guide Service reported continued outstanding kokanee fishing for fish to 15 inches. The fish are holding at 40 feet deep near Carson Cove, Shipwreck and Rose islands at first light before moving down to 50-62 feet in depth. Pink Marni bugs behind a nickel/silver/pink Vance's dodger, Uncle Larry's Blue Tiger spinners, glow blue or pink Shasta Tackle PPK hootchies behind a Vance's dodger tipped with corn scented with vanilla, anise or garlic are the most productive set-ups. Smith said there are schools of kokanee throughout the lake. Rainbow trout to 5 pounds are holding at 30 to 40 feet deep and are hitting rolled shad, ExCels and blade/crawler combinations. An occasional brown trout can be landed on Countdown Rapalas or Trophy Sticks close to structure at 50-60 feet deep. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods in Angels Camp reported a good bass bite with top-water action at dawn or dusk with Zara Spooks, Pop-Rs or buzz baits. Once the sun is up, Senkos, jigs, Carolina-rigged 6-inch plastics, or Zoom Baby Brush Hogs are all working. Catfishing is improving with nightcrawlers, chicken livers or mackerel. Crappie can be found around submerged trees at 10 to 30 feet deep in Bear, Mormon or Carson creeks with small minnows or red/white minijigs. The lake dropped one-half vertical foot to 982.98 feet in elevation and 55 percent capacity. San Luis Reservoir/O'Neill Forebay — Ly Tu of Ly's Fishing Goods in San Jose said the wind blew most of the week, and boaters stayed away from the main lake. A few boaters went out during calm periods with cut anchovy fillets for hit or miss action at depths off Dinosaur Point. The best action has been for catfish in the Forebay around Check 12 with clams or mackerel. A few stripers have been taken on white flukes. McSwain Reservoir — McSwain Marina reported good trout action with rainbow, spring green or chartreuse Power Bait at the Brush Pile. Trollers are pulling blade/crawler combinations, red or chartreuse Wedding Rings tipped with a crawler behind a dodger or small spoons trolled to 30 feet deep along the normal pattern from Gilligan's Island to the Second Fence Line working for trollers.Call: (209) 378-2534.

Pine Flat Reservoir — Merritt Gilbert said there have been several bass in the 2½- to 3-pound range taken on watermelon/red Hula grubs. The bite has been hit or miss with anglers working up and down the banks for no action, then hitting four quality fish on one bank. Trout fishing should remain decent as long as the cool weather pattern holds. The lake dropped six vertical feet to 65 percent capacity and 885.23 feet in elevation. Experienced anglers continue to work planted trout limits on the lower Kings with Power Bait, night crawlers, salmon eggs or lures. Call: 787-2387, 225-1838, 292-3474.

McClure Reservoir — Manny Basi of the Bait Barn in Waterford said there is a top-water bite early and late with dart-heading with the ‹-ounce Revenge Flipper Wacker with Senkos in color 330 from the banks to 20 feet deep. Live crawdads and minnows continue to work. The bass are small. Diana Mello of A-1 Bait in Snelling said trout fishing is good at 30 to 40 feet deep in the river narrows from Barretts Cove to Bagby with blade/crawler combinations, Wedding Rings tipped with a crawler behind a flasher or small spoons. Crappie fishing is improving, with the best action at night under lights at depths to 40 feet near structure in Temperance and Cottonwood Creeks. Catfish action is improving with live minnows or crawdads, anchovies or sardines along muddy, sloping banks at 15 to 20 feet deep. No king salmon or kokanee reports.
