VALLEY

NEW MELONES RESERVOIR — Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing reported continued "red-hot'" kokanee action from 40 to 60 feet with pink Marni bugs behind a Sling Blade, glow blue or pink Shasta Tackle PPK hootchies behind a Vance's dodger around Shipwreck Island, the dam, the south portion of the lake and near the Highway 49 bridge. They landed three limits in 1 hour, 15 minutes Saturday. Fish are 14 to 14.5 inches and growing fatter each week. Bank anglers should head to the local creeks with Power Bait or Pautske's Fire Eggs. Danny Layne of Fishn' Dan's Guide Service reported large rainbows at 30 to 40 feet with Vance's Slim Fins or Shasta Tackle Wiggle Hootchies. An occasional brown trout can be landed on Countdown Rapalas or Trophy Sticks close to structure at 50 to 60 feet. Ben Gibney of Pioneer landed a 3½-pound rainbow on a purple Apex behind a blue dodger at a depth of 51feet near Rose Island. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole in Angels Camp reported the best bass action on topwater lures as fish to 6 pounds were taken on Zara Spooks, Pop-R's or buzz baits during Saturday's Future Pro Tour Tournament. Crappie fishing is fair to good from 10 to 30 feet with small minnows or minijigs in red/white, black/chartreuse or purple/white in Bear, Mormon or Carson Creeks. The lake is at 55 percent capacity. SAN LUIS RESERVOIR and O'NEILL FOREBAY — Ly Tu of Ly's Fishing Goods in San Jose reported cut anchovy fillets in the main lake are producing small stripers to 6 pounds at depths from 40 to 60 feet off Dinosaur Point. Majority of striper fishermen continue to head west to the beaches or San Francisco Bay for the hot bite. Catfish has been the top catches at Check 12 in the forebay with anchovies, mackerel or prepared baits. Lake dropped another nine vertical feet to 402.15. McSWAIN RESERVOIR — McSwain Marina reported good fishing with an excellent water level. Rainbow Power Bait is the big producer at the Brush Pile and handicapped docks with blade/crawler combinations, red or chartreuse Wedding Rings tipped with a crawler behind a dodger or small spoons trolled to 30 feet in depth along the normal pattern from the dam to the second fence line working for trollers. McCLURE RESERVOIR — Manny Basi of the Bait Barn in Waterford reported topwater lures are working early and late before anglers change over to dart-heading with small red ProWorms in color 300 or the Revenge Big Texan jig with an orange Huddlebug trailer. The fish are all small. Crappie fishing is decent at night under lights at depths to 40 feet near structure in Temperance and Cottonwood Creeks. Catfish action is showing signs of life with live minnows or crawdads, anchovies or sardines along muddy, sloping banks at depths from 15 to 20 feet. LAKE DON PEDRO — Danny Layne of Fishn' Dan's Guide Service reported a good kokanee bite around Jenkin's Hill, Big Oak Island or Graveyard Bay at depths from 45 to 65 feet with Uncle Larry's Spinners, Vance's Sockeye Slammers and Glitterbug hootchies in chartreuse tipped with shoepeg corn scented with anise or garlic. Rainbows are located around Fleming Bay at depths from 30 to 40 feet with blade/crawler combinations, rolled shad or ExCels. King salmon to 6-pounds are biting rolled shad or anchovies off of the face of the Dam into Mexican Gulch and from Schoolhouse Point to Jenkin's Hill in the river channel at depths from 70 to 120 feet. Manny Basi reported an improved bass bite with topwater lures working early and late before switching up to eighth-ounce Revenge Flipping Wacker jig heads on Senkos in watermelon/red or Revenge blue gill pattern jigs with a Reaction Innovation Sprayed Grass trailer at depths from the banks to 20feet.
