STOCKTON - The wind continued to plague Delta anglers the majority of the week. It has been next to impossible to fish the open water of the Sacramento River on the large outgoing tide due to the wind and the tide working against each other. Most anglers in this area are launching in Montezuma Slough and staying in the protected waters. Kevin Yost of Lucky Strike Fishing out of Pittsburg said the sturgeon bite has been as good as it has been all year long, with several oversized fish in Montezuma Slough and the Big and Little Cuts. Curtis Hayes at Benicia Bait and Tackle said they experienced a quiet weekend despite the good sturgeon tides. A 65¾-inch, 88-pound sturgeon was landed at the mouth of Montezuma Slough on grass shrimp. Striper fishing from the banks has been very slow. Jay Sorensen of Jolly Jay's Guide Service had an outstanding day midweek with 14 legal stripers to 12 pounds on fresh shad in the San Joaquin River near Twitchell Island. Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, reported a good topwater bite with Pop'N Furbet the Frog, his prototype IMA "Big Stick," and the 7-inch OB Minnow in bluegill patterns early in the mornings. He has been switching over the IMA Shaker crankbait in bluegill or the Berkley Heavyweight or Hand Pour worms on a Zappu Head on the outside of the weed lines. The best plastic patterns have been with a purplish line or green iridescence to imitate bluegills. There were 340 participants at the Berkley Big Bass Challenge, with Tony Ragone of Tracy driving away with the new 2010 Toyota Tundra truck.Call: Randy Pringle (209) 543-6260; Kevin Yost, Lucky Strike Fishing (707) 301-8050, Mark Wilson Sport Fishing (916) 682-1630, Fin Addict Sport Fishing (209) 367-4665, Jolly Jay's Guide Service (209) 478-6645.
NEW MELONES RESERVOIR - Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing reported "red hot" kokanee action at depths from 40 to 60 feet for fish ranging from 13½ to 14½ inches. He wasn't able to get a third rod out before getting a hit on a recent trip. He was using pink Marni bugs behind a Sling Blade, glow green Marni Bugs or glow blue Shasta Tackle PPK hootchies around Shipwreck Island. He came in with limits before 11 a.m. with doubles and triples the rule in the morning. Bank trout anglers should head to the local creeks with Power Bait or Pautske's Fire Eggs. Trollers are using shad or rainbow trout-patterned lures such as Needlefish, Kastmasters, ExCel spoons or blade/crawler combinations at depths from 20 to 30 feet over deep water in the main river channel. An occasional brown trout can be landed on Countdown Rapalas or Trophy Sticks close to structure in 50 to 60 feet in depth. Robert Muhlbeier of Sonora landed a 4¼-pound rainbow on a pink hootchie near Carson Cove in deep water. Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sporting Goods in Angels Camp reported good bass action with an early and late topwater bite with Zara Spooks, Pop-R's or buzz baits. Once the sun has risen, Senkos, jigs, Carolina-rigged 6-inch plastics, ripbaits, spinnerbaits are all working around submerged wood. Barry Franks landed a 5½-pound largemouth on a jerkbait near the Marina. Catfishing is improving on muddy, sloping banks with anchovies, night crawlers, sardines, chicken livers or mackerel. Chris Limas of -- brought a 13-pound whiskerfish to the scales on night crawlers. Crappie fishing is fair to good from 10 to 30 feet with small minnows or minijigs in red/white, black/chartreuse or purple/white in Bear, Mormon or Carson Creeks. The lake is holding at 55 percent capacity. Call: (209) 736-4333, Monte Smith (209) 581-4734, Danny Layne-Fishin' Dan (209) 586 2383, Sierra Sport Fishing (209) 599-2023.
