Host Nuts blast 17 hits in victory over Bakersfield

Derek Jones’ two-run homer in the seventh inning broke a 6-6 tie and vaulted the Modesto Nuts to an 11-8 California League victory over Bakersfield on Wednesday night at Thurman Field.
A crowd of 1,713 watched Modesto rally for four runs in the seventh inning, then add two more runs in the eighth on Francisco Sosa’s two-run single. Sosa also tripled to ignite Modesto’s game-changing seventh.
Pat Valaika keyed the Nuts’ 17-hit attack by going 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Michael Tauchman, Juan Ciriaco, Dean Espy, Alex San Juan and Sosa had two hits apiece for Modesto as the game went back and forth.
Jon Keck (2-3), the Nuts’ third pitcher, went the final 21/3 innings for the win. The Nuts will pursue a series victory tonight over the Blaze.
