It took more than half the California League season, but the Modesto Nuts clinched their first road series victory by defeating San Jose 9-4 Wednesday night in the rubber game of a three-game series at Municipal Stadium. Matt Wessinger drove in three runs, two on a double that capped Modesto’s take-charge four-run third. An inning later, Trevor Story smoked his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right-center. Leadoff man Chris O’Dowd accounted for three of the Nuts’ 14 hits. Starter Jayson Aquino (2-4) allowed two earned runs in five innings for the win, and relievers Shane Broyles, Bruce Kern and Jon Keck contained the Giants’ attack. When Modesto wasn’t hitting, it was striking out – the team whiffed 11 times against four San Jose pitchers. The Nuts (26-51, 3-4 second half) travel to Adelanto for a four-game series beginning tonight against High Desert (38-38, 4-3). The Mavericks are coming off a loss to Rancho Cucamonga, 9-7, on Wednesday.
